Baroque violinist Bjarte Eike pushes boundaries in classical music, constantly looking for new projects in the borderland of genres and is reaching out to new audiences with his infectious playing and style.
As artistic director of BAS, he has created new and innovative concepts such as «An Alehouse Session»; exploring 17th century music from the pubs and alehouses in England, «The Early Joke»; a musical travel through music history, exploring different aspects on humour and music and «Star Wars»; a combination of the sounds and astrological ideas of the Renaissance, free improvisation and the music from Stockhausen’s Tierkreis.
As a freelance violinist and concertmaster, he continues to explore alternative ways of approaching classical music. Although his musical foundation is thoroughly rooted in so-called Historically Informed Performance practice (HIP) he likes to include other artistic aspects in his performances, using visual arts, dance, story-telling, improvisation etc. Apart from BAS, he works regularly with other ensembles, Concerto Palatino, I Fagiolini, Dunedin Consort, Caecilia-Concert, Weser Renaissance, Sirius Viols, Chelycus, Altapunta and Bergen Barokk. He is experiencing a growing interest from European ensembles and orchestras, inviting him as a guest-leader and conductor.
Bjarte Eike also plays in several cross-over formations, such as the Magnetic North Orchestra, a free improvising string trio called Stryk!, and has also developed the project SIWAN together with composer Jon Balke and the Moroccan jazz singer Amina Alaoui
The recording of Siwan on ECM was voted record of the year by the German music critics in 2009.
Eike received his training from the Grieg Academy in Norway and with Richard Gwilt in London, and was Artist in residence at the Bergen International Festival in 2008 and at the Nordwind Festival for performing arts in Berlin 2009. He has participated in a large number of recordings and is currently teaching baroque violin at the Norwegian Academy of Music and as a guest-teacher at the Royal Danish Music Conservatory.
“Bjarte Eike has managed to find a musical expression that swings intensely, with a life and
virtuosity rarely heard of” (Tori Skrede, Verdens Gang).
